Eni has awarded a maintenance contract on its Coral Sul floating LNG (FLNG) facility off Mozambique to Saipem.
The contract will run for nine years, with an option for another year. Saipem, announcing the contract, said it was worth around $150 million.
Saipem’s work will include maintenance for the FLNG facility and onboard supervision. It will also create an onshore base to provide logistics.
The FLNG project is being developed by Coral FLNG, in which the Area 4 partners have stakes. Eni is the operator, while ExxonMobil, CNPC, Galp, Kogas and Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH) are also participating.
The vessel is around 250 km northeast of Pemba and 50 km from the Mozambique shore. The FLNG facility is the world’s first in ultra deepwater, in around 2,000 metres.
Saipem said the award confirmed the company’s activities in the LNG sector. It also strengthens its position in Mozambique.
The FLNG vessel arrived in Mozambique in January. Eni has said it expects production to start in the second half of 2022. It will produce 3.4 million tonnes per year of LNG.
Saipem is also active onshore, at TotalEnergies’ Mozambique LNG project. The French company suspended work on the facility following a terrorist attack last year. However, security is improving and work may restart towards the end of the year, Saipem has said.
