Four more people were found dead after a fatal petrochemical blast in Mexico.
The death toll now stands at 32, Pemex said in a joint statement with Mexican plastic pipe maker Mexichem.
The explosion ripped through a vinyl petrochemical plant in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz on Wednesday. The site is a joint venture between Pemex’s petrochemical unit and majority owner Mexichem.
18 other people remain hospitalized. Pemex said the level of debris and damage had slowed its recovery attempts.
Last week, Pemex’s chief executive said the blast was caused by a leak, but failed to elaborate any further.
The plant produces some 900 tons a day of vinyl chloride monomer, also known as chloroethene, an industrial chemical used to produce plastic piping. The joint venture had forecast sales of $260 million this year.
