Donald Trump’s energy adviser downplayed the presidential nominee’s recent fracking comments.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Continental chief executive Harold Hamm said Trump didn’t fully understand a question about whether or not he supported local bans on fracking.
At the time, Trump had told a Denver television station in July that while he supported fracking, voters should have “a big say” in it.
Fracking has taking centre stage in Colorado in recent months. Two measure to clamp down on the practice could appear on the November ballot. The moves would allow local governments to set restrictions, including a 2,500ft minimum setback for new facilities near permanent structures.
Hamm, who said he had not spoken to Trump about he comments, said he was confident Trump was firmly behind fracking.
“Donald Trump did not understand that concept at the time in my opinion,” he told the Wall Street Journal.
“He does now.”
