ExxonMobil has won eight deepwater blocks off the coast of Brazil in the country’s latest licensing round.
The US-based oil major is now the largest acreage holder in the country of any international company, adding an additional 640,000 net acres to its portfolio in Brazil.
ExxonMobil will operate six of the eight blocks.
The firm says it plans to obtain 3-D seismic data on more than 4,000 square kilometres this year, subject to approval.
ExxonMobil is partnering with Qatar Petroleum on two blocks in the Santos area.
It is also partnering on four blocks in the Campos area, operating two of them in partnership with Petrobas and Qatar Petroleum.
The other two will be run by Petrobas in partnership with ExxonMobil and Statoil.
Meanwhile two blocks in the Sergipe-Alagoas area will be operated by ExxonMobil, in partnership with Queiroz Galvão Exploração e Produção (QGEP) and Murphy Oil.
Steve Greenlee, president of ExxonMobil Exploration Company, said: “This acreage in Brazil’s pre-salt play will provide excellent opportunities to deploy our deepwater expertise.
“We will continue working with the government to develop these world-class resources for the benefit of Brazilians for many years to come.”
ExxonMobil now has 24 blocks in total offshore Brazil.
