BP will follow in the footsteps of rival oil giant Shell by breaking into the Indian petrol station market, a news report said.
BP plans to open up to 3,500 stations in India, which would make it only the second foreign firm to sell fuel there, Reuters reported.
India will grant BP permission for its plans on Monday, an oil ministry official was cited as saying in the report.
Fuel demand has increased rapidly in India as the country’s middle class expands, leading to growth in car sales.
A BP India spokeswoman said the company had applied for a license to set up the fuel stations.
