North-east offshore chemical engineering firm Aubin Group has devised new technology aimed at slashing well abandonment costs.
Aubin’s Xclude reservoir barrier technology can be applied using existing technology and without a rig, taking a large chunk out of the decommissioning bill.
The Ellon-based firm worked with the Oil and Gas Technology Centre (OGTC), the Oil and Gas Innovation Centre and Heriot Watt University to develop Xclude.
Aubin hopes the OGTC can help it find operators who are willing to test the technology on their wells.
Xclude’s specially formulated fluids work by stimulating the formation of scale to create a barrier in the reservoir, rather than in the well-bore.
Aubin chief executive Paddy Collins said: “Xclude was developed with extensive laboratory work collaborating with some of the leading scientists in the field.
“The technology is ready for field trials so that the industry can begin to see significant cost reductions in its P&A activities”.
