As of 30 May, Westwood Global Energy reports that there are five exploration wells active, two in the North Sea, two in the Norwegian Sea, and one in the Barents Sea.
Since the last report, one appraisal and three exploration well programs have completed, two of the exploration wells being successful.
North Sea
Aker BP spudded the 2/8-19 Overly well on 4 May with the Maersk Invincible jack-up rig. The well is targeting two Pliocene reservoirs in a four-way dip closed structure. The well has a 16 day dry hole duration.
Operations are ongoing at Equinor’s 34/9-1 S Cambozola well.
Aker BP completed the HPHT 35/4-3 Laushornet well on 17 May, after spudding on 8 April with the Deepsea Nordkapp semi-sub. The well was targeting the Lower Jurassic sandstones in a series of tilted fault blocks. The well encountered moderate to good quality reservoir, with no hydrocarbon indications so was P&A dry.
Norwegian Sea
The 6507/4-3 S Peder well was spudded by ConocoPhillips on 28 April with the Transocean Norge semi-sub. The well is targeting Upper Cretaceous sandstones in a combination trap. The well has a planned 53 day dry hole duration.
ConocoPhillips completed the 6507/5-11 Slagugle appraisal well on 26 April, after spudding on 8 March with the Transocean Norge semi-sub. The well appraised the 6507/5-10 S discovery which encountered oil columns in the Lower Jurassic Åre Formation and Triassic “Grey Beds”. Pre-drill resources were estimated at 125.9 mmboe. High quality sandstone was encountered in the Åre Formation and Grey Beds but were dry. Injectivity tests revealed communication between the discovery and this well. The result reduces the discovery resources to between 38 to 82 mmboe and development option are being considered.
Neptune completed the 35/9-16 S Hamlet exploration well on 25 April, after spudding on 26 February with the Deepsea Yantai semi-sub. The well encountered hydrocarbons in the Agat Formation with recoverable resources of 8 – 24 mmboe, including resources in the northern part of the structure proven by well 35/9-3 in 1997 that might be in communication. The NPD quote resources of 13.8 – 21.4 mmboe.
Equinor spudded the 6305/5-C-3-H Ormen Lange Deep exploration well on 18 February. The well was suspended c. 24 February to 4 March and again from 9 March to 2 May. Drilling has now resumed.
Barents Sea
Equinor completed the 7220/8-2 S Snøfonn Nord well on 22 May, after spudding on 18 April with the Transocean Enabler semi-sub. The well was targeting Lower Jurassic and Triassic sandstones in a faulted trap. It was P&A as an oil discovery with operator quoted resources of 37 – 50 mmbbl.
Drilling has now resumed in the Equinor-operated 7220/8-3 Skavl Stø well which spudded on 16 April but was temporarily suspended while the Snøfonn Nord well was drilled.
