Statoil said it was dealing with a well control incident on the Songa Endurance semisubmersible drilling rig at the Troll field in the Norwegian North Sea.
The operator said the incident started on Saturday morning and the well was secured with a blowout preventer on the seabed and also with a valve on the rig.
Work was also carried out to stabilise the well with extra specialist staff being sent out to assist the work.
Meanwhile, staff without work assignments in connection with the incident were removed from the rig.
There were around 107 people on board the when the incident happened.
The rig was working on the G4 well in the Troll field near the Troll B facility.
It’s understood complication occurred during the work on removing the production string from the well.
The Troll field is in the northern part of the North Sea.
The incident happened just a day before Statoil was forced to evacuate personnel from one of its North Sea platforms after a fire broke out in a loading pump.
The platform manager reported smoke and fire in a utility shaft on the Statfjord A platform, triggering the Norwegian operator’s emergency response procedures.
