More than a third of offshore workers who took part in a survey noted near misses not being reported.
There were also glaring gaps in overall incident reporting, with almost 30% noting general deficiencies, leaving industry leaders “surprised and disappointed” at the levels of non-reporting of near misses and failure to record.
The research project was carried out by Aberdeen Business School at the Robert Gordon University, in conjunction with global engineering and design software solutions company AVEVA.
Respondents were senior managers, health and safety managers and engineers on the UK continental shelf and throughout the world.
The dean at the business school, Professor Rita Marcella, said: “Only 80% of respondents felt that health and safety was very important in their company, while 75% thought its importance had increased. Again this is somewhat surprising given the high-profile incidents that have taken place in the industry in the last two years.”
