AN OIL company is facing a tribunal over claims its workers on an offshore platform lived in overcrowded conditions.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says people on the Talisman Energy Tartan Alpha platform in the North Sea have “a loss of privacy and insufficient showering and toilet facilities” because too many are being accommodated there.
An improvement notice was issued to Talisman in February after an inspection of the platform – 117 miles north-east of Aberdeen – but the company is to challenge it. It is understood the improvement notice was served in relation to more than two personnel being allocated to the same cabin during a single 24-hour period. HSE officials claim the situation breaches the Offshore Installations and Wells (Design and Construction, etc) Regulations 1996 and they ordered that changes be made to the accommodation area.
Talisman challenged the notice and a hearing has been scheduled for the end of the month.
A spokesman for Talisman said: “Talisman Energy (UK) Limited can confirm that it has lodged an appeal against an improvement notice served by the Health & Safety Executive, in respect of the numbers of personnel that can be accommodated on the Tartan platform. As the matter will now be subject to an employment tribunal hearing.”
An HSE spokesman declined to comment.
