A UNION leader for offshore workers has welcomed a report into safety and environmental regulation in the UK oil and gas industry.
Jake Molloy, regional organiser at the RMT, said yesterday an independent review of the North Sea sector echoed many of the concerns expressed by offshore workers. A panel led by Professor Geoffrey Maitland, of Imperial College, London, praised the UK’s health and safety regime but said the learning culture and processes for spreading best practice should be improved.
Mr Molloy said: “We welcome the view of Prof Maitland and his colleagues, which mirrors our own in terms of safety representatives being given greater encouragement to exercise their powers.
“We also agree with the recommendation for greater industry transparency – if the companies are going to gain the respect and trust of the workforce and the public, they need to show us that what they are doing around our shores is safe.”
