The UK’s offshore health and safety regime could be adopted across Europe after a vote by politicians in Strasbourg tomorrow.
Euro MPs are debating EU-wide laws on oil and gas safety standards tonight and are expected to come to a decision on the proposals tomorrow.
The European commission had previously said there should be one piece of legislation covering all member states, but the UK Government and the country’s oil and gas industry said centralised regulation could undermine the work done in the North Sea.
Earlier this year, the European parliament’s industry, research and energy committee advised MEPs to support proposals that would see regions such as the Mediterranean and Black Sea adopt UK safety rules rather than have Brussels establish its own.
