A NEW report into the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster last year has said there was a failure to react to signs that the well was getting out of control.
The Marshall Islands government also said there was a deviation of standards of well-control engineering and from agreed well-abandonment plans.
In addition, it said there had been a failure to react to multiple indications that a well-control event was in progress and that there was a breakdown in hierarchy of command on the BP-operated Deepwater Horizon rig.
The islands – the flag state of the Transocean-owned rig – praised support vessel Damon B Bankston, however, for contributing substantially to Deepwater Horizon’s evacuation. The rig exploded, killing 11 people and causing the worst spill to date in US waters.
