The Scottish environment secretary has called for “absolute transparency” over the gas leak on the Elgin platform.
Richard Lochhead said the UK Government and operators Total had a duty to make all information public- particularly concerning the risk to the general populace.
The Moray MSP made his comments as it emerged a flare was still burning on the platform three days after Total said all power was turned off on evacuation to minimise the risk of an explosion.
Mr Lochhead said: “Any gas leak on an evacuated offshore installation is, of course, deeply worrying.
“Therefore, it’s critical both Total and the UK Government ensure absolute transparency, with all information placed in the public domain.
“This should include not just details on the level of risk but also how this is calculated.”
The Scottish Government is responsible for monitoring marine pollution, while health and safety comes under the UK Government’s remit.
Mr Lochhead said the gas cloud was expected to disperse naturally and as the situation currently stood, the environmental risks were “minimal”.
“Scottish ministers are being kept fully informed and regularly updated on the situation,” he said.
“Marine Scotland remains in close contact with the UK Government and Total, while I will continue to have regular dialogue with the company and UK ministers.”
