Bob Keiller has been confirmed as one of the speakers at a conference commemorating 25 years since the Piper Alpha disaster.
The Wood Group chief executive will give an after-dinner speech on the second day of the three-day Piper 25 event, which starts on Tuesday, June 18.
Mr Keiller will discuss safety management and leadership at the dinner, which is expected to attract around 350 people.
He said: “No one involved in our industry 25 years ago will ever forget the human tragedy of Piper Alpha. It changed the way we think about safety and was the catalyst for radical change in our approach that has undoubtedly made life safer for offshore teams.
“Many of the approaches pioneered on the UK continental shelf following Piper have been adopted internationally.
“The problem with safety, however, is just when we think we are in control, another event reminds us that we can never be complacent.
“For me, the last 25 years has been a story of improvements in safety management, but if we are to avoid complacency, if we are determined to prevent future tragedies and if we are passionate about putting the safety of our people above all other priorities, then the next 25 years will be about courageous safety leadership.”
Piper 25, which will be held at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, will review how far oil and gas safety has come since the UK’s worst offshore disaster.
