The UK’s potential to become the safest oil and gas sector in the world is second to none, thanks to its unique safety partnership, a senior industry figure has claimed.
Step Change in Safety is a partnership of industry representatives, including the HSE and trade unions, unique in its format to the UK.
The body, set upin 1997, brings together regulators, trade unions and offshore leadership with the aim of making the UK “the safest oil and gas exploration and production province in the world.”
“Step change is very unique, it really brings people together,” said said Martin Rune Pedersen, managing director of Maersk Oil UK.
“It’s not trying to re-invent everything in all the different companies, but actually getting together, sharing the knowledge, sharing best practice and also sharing the challenges that we face,”
As part of the Piper 25 conference, Step Change organised a one-day event, Workforce Involvement Day, which got together 500 industry workers.
“If each one of [the delegates present] goes back and does one thing differently tomorrow, that’s a hugely positive outcome,” said Les Linklater, team leader with Step Change.
“There are pockets where there’s room for improvement and we need to drag, encourage and pull everybody up to the very highest level.”
