Safety processes at energy companies must start with top-level management, a senior industry expert has warned.
John Bresland, former chair of the US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, told Energy Voice that companies must lead by example to ensure safe working practices at all levels.
He also recognised that senior management should ask the right questions when it comes to implementing health and safety in their workplace.
“The main issue that I’ve learnt over the years is that leadership at the very top of the organisation is very important, because if they’re enthused and they feel that process safety is important, it flows down through the organisation,” he said.
“And I think the other lesson on leadership is that if you’re running a company that is a process company you need to understand the hazards – and based on that understanding you need to ask the right questions and put the right expertise in place.”
