The new Category A emergency breathing system (CA-EBS) has been donned for the first time by a group of offshore workers flying out to North Sea installations.
The flight from Scasta airport in Shetland took place on Monday morning, September 18, just after 8am.
It was the first of three deployment phases of the new breathing system across the UK. It will be followed by a launch in Norwich, Humberside and Blackpool on August 25 and in Aberdeen on September 1.
The world’s first Category A EBS was developed by the Survitec Group in response to a government inquiry and report into helicopter safety which followed a fatal crash in the waters off Shetland last year.
The system was approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in July this year. More than 26,000 people have completed mandatory training with the EBS since then.
