Pemex is trying to contain an oil spill which was punctured by thieves.
The Mexican state-owned company said the Gulf coast region of Tabasco has set up an emergency plan in order to supply drinking water to the capital of Villahermosa.
Workers were sent to the spill, which happened last week, as they made an attempt to limit any damage.
Four of the region’s water treatment plants were shut down as a precaution.
Workers also set out containment booms and were trying to scoop oil off the waterways.
The spill comes just a few weeks after a platform fire killed four workers.
Three men are still missing following the incident.
The fire broke out on Pemex’s Abkatun Permanente processing platform in the oil-rich Bay of Campeche leading to the evacuation of 302 people.
The blaze was not extinguished until more than 12 hours later.
In 2012, 26 people were killed in a fire at a Pemex natural gas facility.
A further 37 people also died at a blast at the company’s Mexico City headquarters
