Wintershall has been granted consent by the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) in Norway for an exploration licence in the North Sea.
The company said it will be drilled in a prospect named Orion with drilling beginning in the middle of this month.
The work will take between 47 and 134 days to complete.
Wintershall said the duration will depend on whether a discovery is made which in turn would entail drilling sidetrack wells.
The well will be drilled by the Borgland Dolphin, which is a semi-submersible mobile drilling facility of the Aker H-3 type.
The facility is owned by Fred Oslen Energy and operated by Dolhin Drilling.
