Oil major BP’s jobs boost for the North Sea has been described as a “ray of light” for the UKCS.
Scottish Conservative MSP Alexander Burnett said the continued commitment by the company during the current oil price decline would provide confidence to the industry.
In an exclusive interview with Energy Voice, BP’s North Sea president, Mark Thomas said the 534 jobs were linked to the hook-up and commissioning of the Clair Ridge and Schiehallion project.
The work is expected to last 18 months. The jobs, which are being sourced by Amec, need to be filled by July 4.
The politician said:”This is a very welcome announcement from BP that will provide a ray of light during what has been a particularly bleak period in the history of the North Sea.
“A commitment to not only create 534 jobs, but to stay and keep producing for up to 40 years is a real boost at a very challenging time and should provide confidence for other operators and investors that there remains a strong future for the sector.”
