Oil industry tycoon Sir Ian Wood has urged First Minister Nicola Sturgeon not to call another independence referendum.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, the businessman warned it could cause serious damage to the Scottish economy.
Demands for a second independence referendum have come after the UK voted to leave the European Union (EU).
However a majority of Scots voted in favour of remain.
Sir Ian Wood, who himself voted remain, also said the move would create a lot of uncertainty for the oil and gas industry.
Wood, who has advised both the Scottish and UK governments on energy policy, said it was “one thing” to talk about whether the UK is in Europe or not, but another to say Scotland should be on its own in the EU.
He said Scotland would be a “very small member” of a “very large” community adding the country was likely to have “very little influence” in Europe on its own.
In 2014, Sir Ian Wood warned against supporting the previous Scottish referendum, warning of its impact on the North Sea oil and gas industry in an exclusive interview with Energy Voice.
