A North Sea industry chief has suggested the sector has an image problem it needs to overcome.
Mr Sims, vice president for Europe and the CIS at Expro, said: “We need to promote industry in the right way. My 19-year-old son is a good barometer for me. He does not see the oil and gas industry as relevant.
“It’s interesting that people can talk about the steel industry quite eloquently, but for oil and gas it’s about people at the pump.
“If you doorstep people about oil and gas you might not hear very positive things.
“That’s got to change. This industry provides so much money and so many jobs but, fundamentally, I don’t think we’re recognised.”
Mr Sims was speaking at MER UK in Practice at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
The full-day event was aimed at explaining how the OGA intends to regulate, influence and promote the UK continental shelf to maximise economic recovery (MER).
Mr Sims added: “It’s easy to assume it’s all doom and gloom, but I was interviewing graduates for the Oil and Gas Awards and some of the thinking from those guys reminded me we all have people in our organisations who have solutions if only they can be heard.
“We have a great industry. I don’t know why we do not shout about it more.”
