The scrapping of an oil and gas vessel that wound up on a scrapyard beach in Bangladesh has been delayed, a news report said.
Work to dismantle the North Sea Producer had started in October, but independent media research centre Danwatch said the process had been halted amid fears that the ship may still contain hazardous substances.
The vessel, which was docked near Middlesbrough FC’s Riverside Stadium earlier this year, had been expected to sail to Nigeria.
But in October it emerged that the North Sea Producer, originally owned by Maersk, had been taken to Bangladesh instead.
Norma J Martinez of Danwatch told The Gazette: “The scrapping of the Producer has been put on hold as the environmental authorities in Bangladesh found out the vessel had been beached without clearance from the environmental department.
“The authorities are now investigating whether the ship was properly cleaned before coming to Bangladesh or if there are any hazardous materials.”
