Energy Voice is getting access to the world’s biggest ship ahead of a record breaking topside lift for super major Shell.
The mammoth Pioneering Spirit is due to remove the Anglo-Dutch firm’s Brent Delta topside this summer.
The twin-hulled, heavy lift vessel is currently docked in Rotterdam as it undergoes a series of sea trials.
Next month it is due to set sail for the North Sea’s Brent field – which the iconic market benchmark price is named after – and will lift the topside in one piece.
The Brent Delta topside contains equipment for drilling, producing and processing oil and gas as well as holding an accommodation block and helipad.
The Brent field is an iconic cornerstone of the North Sea success story.
Discovered in the 1970s it has been one of the most prolific finds in the history of British oil and gas.
Shell submitted plans for decommissioning the field earlier this year.
However, they plans, which include leaving the platform legs in the North Sea, have since been criticized by green groups.
The Pioneering Spirit was designed by Swiss-based contractor AllSeas.
Check back tomorrow for video and interviews from the purpose-built ship.
