Scottish Power Renewables has awarded JDR to supply intra-array cables for the East Anglia One offshore wind farm.
The contract will see the Hartlepool based supplier design and manufacture 155km of 66kV cables – the world’s first commercial application of the technology.
It is double the kiloVoltage capacity compared to traidtional offshore cables.
The intra-array connections will enable increased power to be transmitted back to the Suffolk coast more than 40km away from the 102 turbine project.
JDR’s chief technical officer James Young, said: “It’s fantastic to see that 66kV cable technology will be deployed on a large-scale project to further reduce the cost of offshore wind.”
With an overall capacity of up to 714MW, this is the first of four projects in the East Anglia Zone.
The wind farm is expected to power 500,000 homes when fully operational in 2020.
Delivery of the cables is scheduled for Q1, 2019.
JDR was also awarded a non-commercial 66kV contract for the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) in Aberdeen in December 2016.
