A search is being carried out in the North Sea for a man missing from a rig.
At around 9.20pm yesterday, it was reported that a 49 year-old man working on the Noble Lloyd Noble installation couldn’t be found on board.
Inspector Steve McEwan said: “An extensive search of the rig itself and the water surrounding it is ongoing, led by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
“This involves the use of a search and rescue helicopter, two standby vessels and a platform supply vessel.
“We are working closely with the companies involved and next of kin to keep them informed of any developments.”
Police Scotland was called after initial searches of the installation.
The rig is in the Mariner Field, about 90 miles east of Shetland.
It is being operated by Noble Drilling on behalf of Statoil.
All operations have been stood down on the rig.
A spokeswoman for Statoil said the response was being led by Police Scotland and Noble, with assistance from the Norwegian energy firm.
She said: “We have mobilised our emergency response organisation to support Noble, and the authorities and agencies involved in the response effort.
“We will issue further updates as we receive more information.”
