The Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) and the Industry Technology Facilitator (ITF) believe collaboration between the UK and Norway will see North Sea operators hack their way to solving common challenges.
Six major North Sea operators and 100 delegates are collaborating today on the OGA “Hackathon” which will aim to “harness new value adding technologies” while looking at “cost-saving approaches to decommissioning”.
The even has been organised by the ITF and Norwegian Energy Partners, with support from the OGA and Norway’s Petroleum Ministry.
Operators AkerBP, ConocoPhillips, Point Resources, Repsol Sinopec Resources UK, Shell and Statoil will all reveal the real-world challenges they face, followed by a discussion on solutions.
Today’s event is being held at the Aberdeen offices of Aker Solutions while the second will take place in Stavanger, Norway on November 30.
OGA supply chain manager Bill Cattanach said: “From our perspective collaboration is the big word here – the UK and Norway working together with the six major operators.
“The event opens up all these opportunities. There is a need to embrace the concept that many answers [concerning the North Sea] live within the supply chain.
“There is a good spread of experience here and this is a real opportunity to have a North Sea centre of excellence. Success would be coming up with solutions for late-life assets and looking towards decommissioning.”
The Hackathon will also look at ways to enhance safety, minimise impact on the environment and create additional value for companies and governments.
ITF chief executive Paddy O’Brien: “From our point of view we’re delighted to be working with the OGA and hopefully what will come out of today will be an actionable plan to take things forward.
“Norway and the UK should really be working together because despite working within two diverse ecosystems they are bound by common challenges.”
