Norwegian oil rig construction firm Kvaerner has sent a right of appeal to the country’s Water Resources and Energy Directorate over concerns that a planned sea cable between the UK and Norway may hamper operations.
The cable, which will leave Norway via Hardanger Fjord and head towards the UK, could cause operational concerns in the harbour outside Stord, say Kvaerner.
Speaking to Norwegian press, Steinar Røgenes, Kvaerner director, said: “As the cable race is outlined in NorthConnect’s plans, it could conflict with typical marine operations that Kvaerner and other actors carry out in the relevant maritime areas.
“There will always be a fear that measures such as the planned sea cable will introduce restrictions that are cost-effective, which impose limitations on our capabilities to carry out operations, or which imply regulations and restrictions that complicate project implementation.”
Kvaerner has requested that a risk assessment be carried it to assess what effect the cable will have on seafaring, shipbuilding and the offshore supply industry.
