Aker Solutions UK country manager Sian Lloyd Rees said yesterday that the £8 million spent on the company’s rejuvenated subsea facility will help “build a world class service capability” in Aberdeen.
Speaking at the official opening, Ms Lloyd Rees said that the new facility allows Aker Solutions to work in a more “flexible and agile” manner as the firm looks to grow its subsea capability.
She said: “We’ve wanted to build a world class service capability. We have a large installed base here in the North Sea and what we want to do is look at how do we evolve a more agile and versatile service.
“The North Sea is a mature basin we all know we need to work in a more different, flexible and agile way to ensure we can maintain the production of offshore assets and keep the industry vibrant to keep it operating and keep it very relevant in terms of the oil and gas production.”
The £8million site upgrade allows Aker Solutions to extend its services offering beyond subsea controls to include subsea trees and tooling equipment.
It includes installation of new equipment, a reorganization of the space and implementation of lean processing and methodologies, helping to improve efficiency at the site.
Attending the opening, Oil and Gas UK chief executive, Deirdre Michie said: “It’s very important that companies like Aker Solutions continue to invest in the north-east. Subsea is such a key part of the industry. It does give a reinforcement of the confidence that we are starting to see in the [North Sea] basin and we do need companies like Aker who have a strong base here and are working for the UK industry and who are exporting abroad.”
Colin Clark, Scottish Conservative MP for Gordon, added: “On a day that UK Government ministers from the Treasury and DEXEU were in Aberdeen to meet industry leaders, it was fitting to see an example of continued growth in the North Sea oil and gas sector.
“Aker Solutions clearly sees a bright future in the global subsea market and is investing substantially with that goal in mind. I never fail to be impressed by the ambition and innovation shown by companies in the north-east of Scotland and I wish Aker well in the future.”
