Shell’s chief executive said today that the oil industry still needed to do a lot of work to improve safety performance.
Ben van Beurden said the 30th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster had been a timely reminder of the importance of safety.
He said industry had “improved in many ways”, but that it would be a “betrayal” of the 167 who died in the North Sea in 1988 if companies think their work is done.
Mr van Beurden was unhappy that instances of personal safety incidents had increased at Shell in the first half of the year.
He said: “We must keep working to improve HSE performance even if much good work has been done.”
Chris Flint, director of the UK Health and Safety Executive, said in April that a number of recent gas leaks had brought the North Sea “perilously close to disaster”.
Deidre Michie, chief executive of Oil and Gas UK, has replied to Mr Flint outlining the actions being taken by the group, as well as Step Change in Safety.
