The Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) has published its white paper on the organisation’s role in the energy transition.
The new policy position outlines what objectives the OGA will attempt to follow and what it would not do to hamper the energy transition.
It said it would “support fully” the transition to a lower carbon economy.
The OGA pledged to “approve and issue carbon dioxide storage permits and maintain the carbon storage public register”, while also identifying carbon dioxide storage opportunities.
The white paper also said the OGA would “ensure consistency” in its offshore flaring and venting regime with Maximising Economic Recovery (MER) UK and wider government policy, including emissions targets, “by eliminating any unnecessary or wasteful flaring and venting of gas”.
It will also seek to support a wider range of supply chain options.
The OGA pledged to “work collaboratively” with UK Governments and industry to support carbon reduction plans.
It also said it would no longer “conduct activities in relation to the energy transition that run counter to its statutory duties in respect of MER UK”.
