Aberdeen’s Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has announced the creation of a new committee aimed at promoting gender diversity in the North Sea oil and gas sector.
The Women in Energy (WIN) Committee will be launched at the Offshore Europe Conference due to be held at P&J Live next week.
SPE said the female-led group will be focused on attracting women into the oil and gas sector through engaging them in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
It added that the committee’s primary focus will be on encouraging women to “realise their potential” in the energy sector.
Engineer and WIN committee chairwoman, Ritika Pawar, said: “Many would argue that there is currently a lack of encouragement for women to enter the energy industry; this results in a definite shortage of female mentors and role models.
“We therefore aim to create opportunities for women to enable them to step into leadership roles, pursue their career goals and inspire others.”
Offshore Europe attendees are invited before the official evening opening on September 4, at the nearby Hilton Hotel between 2pm – 5pm.
It will be attended by SPE president Dr. Sami Al-Nuaim.
Speakers will discuss their own experiences of diversity, inclusion and balance in the workplace.
The afternoon event is free to attend, however due to limited capacity, all those interested are required to register prior to the date by emailing: yp@spe.org.
The Aberdeen section of the SPE is one of its biggest across the world with over 2500 members.
