Findlay Anderson of Baker Hughes will become the new chairman of the sector’s diversity and inclusion (D&I) task group.
Mr Anderson, vice president and general counsel for oilfield equipment at Baker Hughes, will take over from current chairman Craig Shanaghey, president of operations services for EMEA at Wood, who has led the Task Group since its creation in 2019.
The D&I Task Group was devised under the leadership of industry body Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) in the summer of 2019 to drive forward diversity and inclusion in the sector, catalyse action and share good practice.
Under Mr Shanaghey, the group produced the first industry-wide survey into D&I within the sector. Titled ‘Building a Baseline: OGUK Diversity and Inclusion Survey Report’, the resulting report was produced in partnership with Robert Gordon University (RGU) and provided insight on the industry’s key challenges.
Responses were used to calculate an average, scoring the sector 7.1/10, but also highlighted disparities in gender and ethnicity representation.
He also oversaw the creation of the OGUK D&I Ally Network, which works in parallel with the activities of the task group and provides a platform for industry professionals to share examples of best practice, develop the direction of the group and align activity.
Mr Anderson, who has worked in the energy and infrastructure industries for more than 20 years, has been in the group since its inception, alongside leading the internal UK D&I programme for Baker Hughes for the past four years.
During that time, Baker Hughes has received multiple industry accolades for its D&I initiatives, including the Diversity & Inclusion award at the 2021 OEUK Awards.
Mr Anderson said it was “an honour” to be asked to take on the role.
“Craig and the group have achieved so much already in the past few years. 2022 is already shaping up to be a busy year as we increase the momentum and focus around this key area of challenge and opportunity for our industry,” he added.
Commenting on the appointment, OEUK chief executive Deirdre Michie said: “We welcome Findlay into the role as Chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Task Group, at what is a challenging but ambitious time for our industry. Diversity and inclusion is at the heart of our sector’s ability to transition to cleaner technologies, while underpinning energy security – we need to attract and retain a diversity of talent, skills and experience, as well as ensure inclusive and collaborative ways of working.
“Just one year on from signing the North Sea Transition Deal, we are in action supporting the nation’s transition to a lower-carbon future, but we still have a way to go.
Ms Michie also thanked Craig Shanaghey for work in leading and driving efforts since 2019.
“Under his leadership, the group spearheaded industry’s first crucial survey into D&I within our sector and its insights will help drive forward further improvements as we work collectively to reach our net zero targets,” she said.
