Petrofac has been named well engineering operator on the upcoming i3 Energy Serenity appraisal.
i3 Energy said the well is on track to be drilled in early September, with a well slot between August 15 and September 15.
London and Toronto-listed i3 (I3E) has previously said it is hoping for 100 million recoverable barrels from Serenity oil project in the Central North Sea.
In March, I3 announced Europa Oil and Gas had farmed in to a 25% stake in the project, and that it had hoped to drill as early as Q1 this year.
CEO Majid Shafiq has described it as a “company-maker” and the “gem” in Aberdeenshire-headquartered i3’s portfolio.
Petrofac Facilities Management, which drilled the discovery in 2019, will perform the Serenity appraisal for i3 using the Stena Don semisub rig.
The contact allows i3 access to Petrofac expertise for a three-year period, it said.
Mr Shafiq said: “We are very pleased to be working again with PFML who we contracted to drill the Serenity discovery well in 2019, where operations were completed successfully, safely, on time and on budget.
“Operations planning is well underway, and we are on-track to spud the Serenity appraisal well in early September.”
i3 has previously said that Serenity has numerous “evacuation options”, including the Bleo Holm floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO), or the Captain field.
However if resources are as strong as hoped, then i3 is expected to use a standalone FPSO for it.
