Equinor has joined forces with other leading firms in Norway to establish a “national powerhouse” for artificial intelligence.
The energy giant is to work with others including quality assurance firm DNV GL and telecommunications firm Telenor on the Norwegian Open AI Lab.
The project is an extension of the Telenor NTNU AI-Lab in Trondheim and will focus on research on the use of big data and artificial intelligence.
It will seek to develop solutions specific to the partners’ industries, as well as consider international opportunities for Norway.
NTNU rector, Gunnar Bovim, said: “NTNU is proud to host the Norwegian Open AI Lab. With this powerhouse, we ensure the recruitment of talented professionals and students to the field.
“This lab will develop tomorrow’s technology and methods as well as help solve today’s challenges across fields and usage areas.”
A spokesperson for Equinor said: “Artificial intelligence has an enormous potential, and we are just on the starting line.
“Through this initiative, we wish to build a strong centre of excellence for artificial intelligence within academia and Norwegian industry aimed at solving common issues.”
