Celebrities including Colin Firth and Mark Ruffalo have penned an open letter to UK Prime Minister David Cameron calling on him to stop fracking in communities that have already voted against it.
Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has also added her name to the rallying call which has urged the politician to protect the “democratic decisions” of residents in northern England.
Several applications to frack in the region submitted by Cuardilla Resources had been rejected.
However, following an appeal by Cuadrilla, the UK government intervened and decided to take the final decision on their application rather than Lancashire County Council.
The letter, which had also been signed by Biance Jagger, Felicity Blunt and Livia Firth, calls for Cameron to “let local voices and councils decide about frackng applications”.
It said:“Lancashire residents and their locally elected representatives in the County Council voted overwhelmingly – just months ago – to reject the fracking applications by Cuadrilla. You have said communities would have a voice in whether fracking would happen near them, but now their decision is at risk of being overturned by your government following the planning inquiry, which finishes tomorrow.
“We urge you and Communities Secretary Greg Clark to respect Lancashire’s decision and let their rejection of fracking stand.”
