France plans to invest around €3billion into EDF after a decision by shareholders.
The company announced the move two days before it is expected to give the final go-ahead for construction of two nuclear reactors in the UK.
At an extraordinary general meeting, shareholders approved a four billion increase in share capital, of which France, which owns 85% of EDF, is to pay €3billion.
Plans for the share issue were first announced in April.
EDF must also step up renovations to extend the life of its 58 nuclear reactors in France.
