A Chinese energy company set to invest in the UK’s Hinkley Point Nuclear power station is allegedly facing charges of nuclear espionage in the US, according to reports.
The Times newspaper is reporting today that state-owned China Nuclear Power (CGN) has been accused of a conspiracy to steal US industry secrets in order to aid the development of Chinese technology.
A senior adviser to CGN is expected to appear in court next week.
He is accused of recruiting US experts to find out secret information.
Szuhsiung Ho has denied the charges. His lawyer says he was involved in commercial consultancy for CGN.
Earlier this week, Lord Mandelson warned Prime Minister Theresa May she must make a decision on whether or not to approve the Hinkley Point project before the end of next month or risk jeopardising increasingly important economicties with China.
