A North Sea oil and gas firm has helped lay the building blocks for a new Lego club.
Maersk Oil UK has donated a Lego boat worth hundreds of pounds following an appeal from the city’s library service.
As well as being one of the world’s most popular toys, the Danish blocks can also help educate children and have gained a global following.
Now, inspired by the success of other groups across the world, the Granite City has set up its first Lego literacy club.
It follows an appeal for used bricks to help get the community initiative up and running.
Last night, the authority’s education convener declared the appeal had been a “great success”.
Councillor Angela Taylor said: “On behalf of Aberdeen libraries service, I thank Maersk Oil UK for its generous donation of Lego.
“A big ‘thank you’ must also go to everyone who has donated Lego for the benefit of our youngsters. It encourages children to learn word creation, problem solving, developing memory, creativity and is a lot of fun.”
The club, which is open to children aged eight and above, will start on November 2 at the city’s central library, from 4-5.15pm.
It is also scheduled to meet on a monthly basis on a Wednesday in the children’s library from 4-5.15pm from December onwards. Booking is essential.
