Shell is moving to seal off the second of two exploration wells off Nova Scotia.
The firm began work on the deepwater Monterey Jack well on the Scotian shelf in September last year.
The work began not long after the firm had decided to abandon the Cheshire well about 250km southeast of Halifax.
A spokesman for Shell said it was too early to speculate on what the results of the well could be.
It is expected to take some time to analyse the information gathered from Monterey Jack by a contracted exploration vessel.
There have been previous concerns about deepwater drilling off Nova Scotia from groups including fisherman and environmentalists.
