SPE Aberdeen Young Professionals have had a very busy year so far and are excited for what is in the pipeline after the summer.
SPE Aberdeen Section’s Young Professionals Committee is a group of driven and enthusiastic young professionals in the energy industry, whose main objective is to help young professionals develop their technical knowledge, skills and network. With the support of industry experts and professional development providers, they organize regular events throughout the year to achieve these objectives.
One of their most successful programs is the Simplified Series. These monthly technical events, which are open to industry professionals at all levels, provide a very useful and easy way to digest often complex technical knowledge and hot industry topics. Guest speakers include operators and major contractors discussing project case studies, government bodies highlighting regulatory updates and developers covering emerging technology, with presentations focused on encouraging YPs to develop themselves beyond the radius of their current professional discipline.
The YP committee is also addressing the fact that non-technical skills are often neglected but play an important role in the development of young people, enabling them to reach their full potential. As the name suggests, their Unplugged 360 series encourages young professionals to take a 360-degree view on the many different behavioural components we exhibit, both consciously and subconsciously, to help understand how interpersonal skills can play a crucial role in our professional day-to-day lives. This non-technical series also aims to educate and spark more interest in skills and behaviours often regarded as less important and even forgotten, such as emotional intelligence, management, effective communication, leadership, inclusion and diversity.
A recent addition to the committee’s portfolio of events has also quickly become very popular. Tech Tours provide a rare opportunity to visit and see behind the scenes of local companies, and to receive a practical insight into the energy sectors these companies are operating in.
During Offshore Europe 2019, the YP Committee will once again host their annual Emerging Engineers Forum. Round table discussions provide the young professionals with a platform to engage with senior professionals in the energy industry and discuss a specific topic in an interactive fashion. With a fantastic line up planned for this year, this is an event not to miss!
