Commuters have been urged to leave extra time for journeys to work this morning with congestion expected on the roads for the start of the Offshore Europe event.
About 50,000 visitors are expected to converge on the city for the four-day industry showcase at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC).
A raft of traffic restrictions have been put in place around the arena – and motorists have been warned to expect delays.
Bridge of Don ward councillor and deputy provost John Reynolds said residents should use public transport where possible, but be prepared for hold-ups.
He said: “The management system that is being put in place looks as if it will have the traffic flowing quite well – there is basically one big one-way system around the AECC.
“I think it will work, but we are going to have 50,000 people here, about five or six thousand of whom will have cars, so it is going to be very busy, that’s for sure.”
The one-way system will be in operation on Claymore Drive and Exploration Drive, while Conference Way will be closed with the exception of taxis and authorised vehicles.
Right turns will be banned from Ellon Road into Links Road, from Ellon Road into Hutcheon Gardens and from Hutcheon Gardens into Ellon Road.
Hutcheon Gardens and Balgownie Crescent will both be closed at the junctions with Ellon Road.
Visitors will not be able to park on grass verges between Intown Road, Ellon Road and the Parkway and parking restrictions are also in place on the south and west sides of the Esplanade, between Ellon Road and Accommodation Road, as well as at points on the east and north sides where temporary bus stops will be set out.
The width restriction on the Esplanade has been temporarily suspended, as have bus lanes on Parkway East and on the A90 Ellon Road approaching the AECC.
People travelling to the event from the north can use AECC’s car park 10 on Claymore Drive and those coming from the west can use the Kingswells park-and-ride service, on the A944 Aberdeen to Alford road.
A free shuttle bus will operate during peak times from Gordon Barracks and Beach Esplanade.
