Three people have been injured after an Italian drilling rig caught fire while in dry dock in Rotterdam this morning.
The Scarabeo 5 rig, which is docked at the Keppel Verolme shipyard, caught fire in the early hours of Friday morning. The blaze is understood to have started in a welder’s shop.
One worker was taken to hospital with burns while two others were reportedly treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
The Statoil-chartered rig was used earlier this year for drilling on Visund South in the Norwegian sector before being docked at the yard for refitting. It was supposed to be delivered to Statoil later this month.
Initial reports suggested a gas leak was responsible, but Keppel Verolme managing director Harold Linssen told Dutch media that the cause was not yet known.
