Rebel forces and the South Sudan government have signed a ceasefire to bring to an end more than five weeks of fighting that brought the new African state to the verge of civil war.
The bitter conflict, between troops loyal to president Salva Kiir and those supporting the sacked vice president Riek Machar, saw thousands killed and tens of thousands more taking refuge at UN camps.
Oil workers were evacuated to safety after the conflict spilled onto the country’s key fields, with 98% of the crisis-torn country’s revenue derived from oil exports.
Now the government and rebel forces have agreed a ceasefire in a bid to try and bring peace to the country.
