A record number of companies are taking part in the latest Scottish trade mission to the Oil and Gas Asia (OGA) industry showcase in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Scottish Enterprise (SE)-led delegation at the event, being held from today until Thursday, has 15 firms on board.
As you might expect, there is a strong presence from the north-east as businesses in the energy sector look to expand overseas.
SE’s roster includes – among others – Aberdeen Drilling School, Aleron Subsea, Bianco International, Collabro Group, IQ Integrity, Kelton Engineering and Mooring Systems.
There is also a north and north-east presence through the Asia Pacific subsidiaries of companies including Global Energy Group, Hydro Group and Optimus Oil and Gas Engineering.
OGA is the biggest annual oil and gas event in the Asia Pacific region, so an ideal setting for the Scottish contingent to learn more about the growing opportunities in that part of the world for expertise in areas such as subsea engineering, asset integrity and sensor systems.
Nearly half of the firm’s taking part in the Malaysian trade mission are also to visit Indonesia – in SE’s first delegation to the country – to explore emerging opportunities there.
They will be represented at a seminar arranged between SE and the Indonesian government to highlight how Scottish expertise can support the development of the country’s oil and gas sector as it moves into deeper and more challenging offshore environments.
Scottish companies are becoming increasingly active in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in Singapore, which was identified as the second biggest global market for international sales after the US in the recently published annual survey of international activity within Scotland’s oil and gas supply chain.
The survey also identified Asia Pacific as one of the best region’s for immediate growth opportunities.
David Rennie, international sector head for oil and gas at SE said: “We know from the work we’ve been doing in the region that Asia Pacific represents huge opportunities.
“Scotland has world-leading capabilities across right across the sector, but our particular strengths in areas such as subsea engineering and asset integrity means our companies are ideally positioned to support the region in it’s ambitions to grow the oil and gas industry.
“By looking to develop opportunities in new markets such as Indonesia, we’re also ensuring that Scotland remains at the forefront of the industry as it expands in new geographical areas.”
