The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) in the US said owners of operation rights will be required to submit their expenditures for decommissioning of wells, platforms and other facilities.
The move will affect sites on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) as part of the final decommissioning costs rule.
The US body said the information would help it to estimate future decommissioning costs related to OCS leases, rights-of-way, and rights of use and easement.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management may also use BSEE’s future decommissioning costs estimates to set necessary financial assurance levels to minimise or eliminate the possibility the government will incur decommissioning liability.
