West African energy development group Gasol has appointed Rilwanu Lukman as its new chairman after existing chair Cornelia Meyer confirmed she would step down next month.
The 74-year-old former OPEC secretary general will assume the role of chair from August 1, when Meyer – a former vice president of UBS – steps down from the company after a year at the top.
Dr Lukman, who has more than 40 years experience in petroleum and mining sectors, was Nigeria’s minister of petroleum resources from 1986 to 1989, and former chairman of the country’s electricity authority.
He also founded Afren and served as its chairman until 2008, as well as serving as an adviser to the Gasol board.
“I am delighted to see Dr. Lukman take over from me as chairman,” said Ms Mayer who will remain as a strategic adviser to the board.
“He is extremely well placed to drive the evolution of Gasol into its next phase. His lifelong experience within the oil & gas sector in Africa, as well as his seniority, will give the company the leadership and insight it needs.”
