Steve Hall has taken over as chief executive of the Society of Underwater Technology following the retirement of Dr Bob Allwood after more than seven years leading the learned society.
Steve is no stranger to marine science, subsea technology, education & policy, bringing 30 years of experience to the role, having had significant involvement with the society for the past number of years in the capacity as a member of council, honorary secretary and chairman, as well as supporting with talks to a broad section of the membership.
In his new role Steve is committed to steering the SUT through changing times as the global subsea sector broadens its remit into new areas including deepsea mining, offshore renewables, carbon capture and storage, increased use of marine autonomous systems and retaining a focus on the oil & gas sector which continues to drive new technology forward.
These are exciting times as the society recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and now we are looking ahead to the next 50 years.
Although London-based, Steve will regularly work from the Aberdeen office in order to build links with the UK oil & gas sector and to work closely with the very well-supported and active
Aberdeen SUT branch committee to deliver value-adding events for this region.
We are delighted to confirm that the next subsea awareness course, which is run by industry experts, is being held next month (May 22-26) following a significant revamp
during what has been a challenging period for classroom and site-based interactive courses over the past couple of years.
Another highlight in the coming year will be the Offshore Site Investigation & Geotechnics Committee’s 8th international conference, Smarter Solutions for Future Offshore Developments in London from September 12-14.
It will focus on new research and developments in site investigation data acquisition, evaluation and integration, geotechnical analysis and design as well as field operational experience, which is attracting a global audience. See: http://www.sut.org/event/osig2017/ for more information.
