Aberdeen University vice-principal Dame Anne Glover has joined the board of the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult.
Dame Anne – a former chief scientific adviser for Scotland – takes over the non-executive role from ex Scottish Secretary Baroness Helen Liddell of Coatdyke, who has stepped down from the board after a three-year term.
ORE Catapult, run from offices in Glasgow, Leven and Blyth, Northumberland, was set up in 2013 to become the UK’s flagship technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.
It aims to deliver prioritised research underpinned by world-class test and demonstration facilities.
Backed by a £1.4billon public and private sector funding commitment over five years, it works with industry, academia and the UK Government to reduce the cost of offshore renewable-energy and create economic benefit.
Dame Anne, also a former adviser to the president of the European Commission, said: “One of the most exciting prospects we face is to harness renewable-energy.
“Any new technology poses both challenges and opportunities, and the ORE Catapult is the catalyst to procure and harness knowledge, engage industry large and small and to accelerate the delivery of sustainable energy options. I greatly look forward to contributing to that process.”
ORE Catapult chairman Colin Hood said: “I am extremely pleased to welcome Dame Anne.
“Her considerable experience of science, technology and innovation, and of shaping both UK and European policy, will prove invaluable at a critical time for the … industry as we seek to drive technology innovation to lower the cost of energy from the UK’s extensive offshore renewable resources.”
